I was going to burn a cd of songs i have on my computer to take to a party, but we were out of cds. if we wouldnt have been out and i burned it, would that have been illegal? i was gonna listen to it there, then take it home.

is it also legal for my friends dad to give me a copy of an abba cd so i could pratice for a talent show?

No, as long as you own the songs on your computer.

All the songs I have on mine were either downloaded from my own CD collection or bought on Itunes or the like. I own them, they are my property. It would be like you grabbing a cd from your shelf and taking it to a party.

The whole deal comes down to the question: "did you BUY the CD or song(s) before you downloaded them?" If the answer to both are "yes", then burn away and shun the guilt. It's also NOT illegal to borrow a friend's CD to listen to.

Don't worry about it.

Its ok without telling anyone that its a copy and not been complained to the police or to the relevant copiright holder

(but remeber its not legal)
