I saw this print at the MoMA in NYC. It was a picture of a tree with trash as leaves and the caption said, "Worldwide Trash (thanks for nothing Hegel) "

Hegel was one of the most famous German philosophers; he wrote and taught in the early 1800s. His ideas were influential in a lot of different ways, but I think what the artist may have in mind is his belief in progress. He thought humanity was inevitably working its way toward the most free and just society possible, and that this tendency was spreading throughout the world.
