guitarists, strumming or picking?

I've played guitar for 40 years and can tell you that there is no one style fits all. Strumming is good for a rhythmic affect and adds a good background for the lead. Picking has it's uses also and there are the techniques using the pick and also the finger picking styles as well. Some songs just sound better with each individual style. I mean there are songs that you just cannot strum to and others that are just strumming songs!

I like a combination of both but I rarely strum more than 3 or 4 strings at a time. Mainly I finger pick or use a flat to play arpeggios.

It depends on what I'm playing. If you are playing with another guitarist, you could play rhythm guitar and strum, while your friend plays lead, and picks different notes. Or it can be the other way around. I like to play both.

both are great, but i find a combination of the two to be particularly effective

for instance, norwegian wood by the beatles has a great picking and strumming part

also, stairway to heaven has some great picking moments AND great strumming moments

acoustic - strum with an occasional pick
electric - pick with almost no strum
