It depends on whether or not you want a fragrance and your skin's level of sensitivity. My whole family and I have very sensitive skin, but I didn't like the way my laundry felt without using fabric softener. What I found was that if I took a box of borax, mixed it with a gallon of distilled water and lemon oil/orange oil/Cinnamon oil/...any concentrated oil that you like the scent of and won't irritate your skin (you can get scented oils that are natural at any store that sells organic products like Whole Foods, Wild Oats, Trader Joes) and mixed it all together, what I got wasn't pretty, but works great and won't stain/spot clothing. Downy and all of those other fabric softeners contain oils that can (and very often DO) spot your clothing and once dried, I've not been able to find a way to get those &(*#@%% spots completely out. You can also add baking soda and/or borax to the wash cycle for extra water-softening/laundry freshening.

White vinegar makes a good fabric softener, especially in 100% Polyester Garments that can be stained by regular fabric softener. Add 1/2 cup of Vinegar to the rinse water when you do laundry. It will cut soap detergent residue, and leave clothes smelling fresh, and soft.

reliable question! there's a recipe for utilising vinegar as a organic fabric softener by utilising including a million/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle as a replace of the save offered fabric softeners.
