I don't know but the clowns over here are obnoxious.
Probably due to that book turned into movie, "It" by Stephen King. My nieces lived in fear of clowns when they were younger but are now fine with it as they got older.

The technical term is coulrophobia. All phobias are fears not based on rational reason. The danger is more perceived then real. John Gacy and Stephen King's novel character are poor examples. There have been literally millions of clowns over the years and a very small percentage of them have done any foul deeds. The Stephen king clown is a matter of fiction. Gacy was an isolated incident. In short, people are afraid of clowns because of their own psychological shortcomings. Not because of any real danger.

They are so ugly for some people, and then people are afraid;or people are watching horror's movies where the clowns are the bad guys.

Smiles are suppose to be warming and loving and suppose to make you smile back. Clowns smiles make you curl up, run away and take a sh!t in your pants. They mostly wear the color red, which makes me think of blood. Always has a demented facial expression that is suppose to be funny but not. Talks like a killer maniac. Walks like they got a stick up they're asssess. You know when that clowns job is done, he goes home and eats kids. I can go on.
I'm not afraid of clowns because of Stephen King's "It" either.

Because it's trendy?
Seriously, clowns are a bit "over the top" in their appearance...manic make-up, hair in colors not found in nature, crazy behavior, and there's always the Stephen King movie "It" if you still aren't afraid of clowns...

Some became frightened of clowns as little children at the circus, etc., and never got over it. Others have seen weird movies and sci-fi shows about some bad-bad clowns.

Because of Steven Kings' movie the "It". I just found out that this is the reason why one of my family members are scared of clowns.
