When someone says they have "crabs," they are talking about a particular type of parasite infection. Crabs is the common term for lice found in the pubic hair of humans. Barely the size of a pinhead, lice are organisms that live only with the help of another organism, called a host.
The official name for pubic lice is Pthirus pubis
Crabs are usually found on the pubic hair, but can be also be found on other parts of the body where a person has coarse hair (such as armpits, eyelashes, and facial hair). Crabs rarely infest head hair.
Anyone can get crabs. Having crabs does not mean a person is unclean or dirty.
