I'd rather have an open mind than be a stick in the mud. I'd rather that the money I pay in taxes would go to help other citizens. I'd rather the government help people when their cities have been decimated by hurricanes, floods, etc. I'd rather try to see Arabs, Israelis, Mexicans, all people, as just that: people, with all their various ways of thinking, all their bumps and sins, all their beauty. (Because we are all made in the image of God, right ? ) (That's a question for the Christian fundamentalists) Remember: "Love your neighbor as yourself"? (Jesus, when asked about the greatest Commandment.) What's wrong with feeling that whatever I do to the least of Jesus' brothers (Jews and Arabs would be closest kin, wouldn't they), that I do unto Him?
And, if you're NOT Christian, what's wrong with the golden rule?
Oh yeah, one more thing: Who died and made YOU boss?

edit: to fiddler--I don't "go for the throat" and religion and conservatism seem to go together these days. (And I wanted to show that a liberal could have Christian values.
to anadaman--Christians blast others all the time, especially on "Answers" (By the way, I am a Christian and that's WHY I'm a liberal.) Sure, we blame America--it's the only place we have the right to "fix". Anti-war? Hell, yeah! Always!!!
to kenny p--I always thought that the liberals held the moral high ground. Now you tell me we're not! What to do???
to rlp--how dare you lump anyone who receives help as "lazy"? I bet I work harder, physically, than most people my age, and I'm poor, can't afford medical and dental care that I need, and DON'T get any help from any program. I wish I could. (And then I wish someone WOULD call me lazy!!)
cultural values? sounds racist to me.

The daily life of human beings is like a symphonic orchestra. If any of the instruments that are part of the orchestra is missing, the music would be incomplete. That's why the world needs all the voices, all the perspectives.
This can only be done through the values of pluralism, tolerance and compassion. And those values are the historic and ethic legacy of liberal thought and action.
The problem, then, is not with being a liberal.

Present day "Liberals" do not really have ideas they believe in a myth that they are the most tolerant people in the world but when it comes right down to it they are the most intolerant. They say that they are for the "downtrodden but all they want to do is keep them downtrodden" They have no new ideas of their own but only hateful speeches that condemn how the other side is handling an issue.
Why do you think that liberals would have done a better job with Katrina and what is there track record in similar instances. You talk about being tolerant and then you blast Christians when was the last time you saw a conservative blast Mexicans, Israelis, Arabs... they don't but you imply they do and pretend that you are somehow superior.
There is nothing wrong with having true Liberal ideas such as Socialized Medicine, Income redistribution, or Social problems I don't agree with most of them but they are good hearted in nature. But the only position that liberals seem to really have is Anti Bush, Anti War, and Blame America first and that is just ridiculous.

Nothing wrong with being a Liberal, the principles of liberalism....are older than all existing constitutions and are more deeply rooted than any formulation of them that can be put into words....The liberal philosophy holds that governments must be held accountable to someone besides themselves. liberalism holds that unless there is method for changing the governors w/out wrecking the nation, and that unless there is a method be it through elections or otherwise, that the nation will be at the mercy of Violence, in the form of Terrorism, Assassination,Conspiracy, Mass Compulsion and Civil War. Sound familiar! Lets think about getting back to better times, lets go Liberal

AMEN! And to be honest, Jesus was probably the biggest liberal in his time in Jewish culture. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having an open mind, and people who cling to the old way of thinking and look at outsiders and those different from them as less than human, and they call themselves Christian, my answer to them is BULL (I'm a Christian, and trust me, there is nothing "stuck in the mud" about me). There is nothing wrong with having your tax dollars go to help OTHERS in their time of need. Although so many of those who oppose liberalism proclaim to be Christian, their way of thinking is so self-centered and darwinistic that it really doesn't show and makes the majority of Christians look all the more like hypocrites (and as a Christian I can admit that a lot of us do look like hypocrites). So again, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being a liberal. I personally may not agree with certain points of view, but I would still try to be openminded about things.

this is my personal opinion as a conservative. There is nothing wrong with being liberal but a lot of conservatives have a HUGE problem with the democrats because they aren't simply liberal they are FAR LEFT liberals. The same way we have a problem with the GOP being run by the FAR RIGHT. Thats just me...im not a liberals for many reasons mainly because i detest feminists because they aren't pro-female they are anti-male. And because liberal's tend to side with racist things like the affirmative action and other things that simply continue to make a distinction between races. I think the most qualified person should be hired and we should all be treated equal but for the most part liberal parties say those who have been treated badly (mostly by now long dead people) should be given special treatment to make up for it. And that is just the racism in the other direction. Its not equality its revenge. Just my opinion. If you are liberal then love it and have fun. Be yourself and dont let people steer you away from it. Good luck

It's nothing wrong being a true liberal.. the problem is some people said themselves they are liberal because they don't really know what's going on and ignorance.. for example, you shouldn't kill jews or arabs or whoever because they are human being.. but you SHOULD be cautious and be aware of the danger they impose on you and your family.. (i am not siding anything, just making a point) not everyone are liberal especially your enemy.. but that didn't give a right to start a war at all the wrong places like Iraq...
Don't be mistaken, i love liberal and i am liberal.. but you have to be careful on some issues..

Nothing's so terribly wrong with being a liberal or a conservative. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and in the USA at least to a vote for the candidate that they believe will represent them in our government.
What's terribly wrong is demonizing the 'other' and the politics of hate. I'm NOT saying you're doing that; you're not... (though the implication that you're a stick in the mud if you're not a liberal perhaps comes close). What I'm saying is that I'm tired of the divisiveness that's growing ever stronger in this country. If we worked more to talk about issues, really listen to each others' perspectives, and perhaps respectfully agree to disagree, we'd all be better off.
BTW,... I consider myself a 'liberal' to a 'moderate' on most things, and 'conservative' on a very few others. If you ask me about a specific issue, the answer will seem to be anywhere on that spectrum...
[Gee, let's hope the conservatives are respectful on this question... :)]

Christian?
If you support this president, remove the cross from around your neck, the rosary beads strung over your rear view mirror, and the prayer cards you display in your homes. These revered signs of faith are reserved for those who honor the priniciples set forth by a man who taught love, tolerance, and understanding.
The present Administration and those who blindly follow it have not only condoned but embraced torture, unlawful imprisonment without hope of a fair hearing, and secret prisons. In addition, they have smuggled human beings to other countries where the most heinous conduct can be indulged.
This President and his minions have made a mockery of the Christian faith, and spit in the face of those who adhere to its tenets. Bush's illegal and immoral war has killed thousands upon thousands of innocent men, women and children, while ignoring laudable principles such as feeding the hungry and caring for the sick. He preys upon the unsuspecting sheep by offering money and influence to their corrupt, money-grubbing pastors in exchange for votes based on hatred, bigotry and intolerance.
If you have transferred your religious faith away from the teachings of a forgiving and merciful God, and placed it instead in a President who promotes violence and torture, you are not a Christian.
Once you have dispensed with displaying your symbols of Christianity, you are free to fluant you W stickers, and all other pro-Bush, pro-Administration paraphenalia you are so fond of. In fact, I would encourage you to do so.
It's always helpful to know who the real enemies of America are.
This brave question deserves to be complimented. It's the best I've seen in a long time.

There's nothing at all wrong with being a liberal. Jesus was a liberal. He didn't have much (if any) money. He believed in helping people, not killing them. And he went around the middle east trying a spread a new religion to anyone who would listen. Jesus would be known as a liberal wacko by many Christian Conservatives if he were alive today.
