If you're looking for a cheap DIY solution, just stick something under it so that it gets some air.
my favorite technique is to use my wallet. it's soft enough that it doesn't slide around (like plastic or hard materials), is just the right thickness so it gets plenty of air but doesn't jack it up too much (like a low-rider.... then cd's won't have room to pop out), and I ALWAYS have it available in my pocket!
The other thing you can do (if you're willing to spend about 10 bucks) is get a mini fan to put on your desk, pointed right at the "battery spot". You could even "put a fan on a dolly" if you're a dollyfan.

First off, MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERIES ARE NOT FROM SONY!!!!!!!
Next, buy a cooling pad for your laptop
Third, Keep some space beside the cooling vents(whatever they are called) so that there is some air
Fourth, Go DISABLE a lot of your eyecandy and graphics on WIndows, switch to CLASSIC style, it really helps.
Fifth, download Windows Defender and go to tools and get the programs you dont use every single day off of the auto start up. It helps with both system speed and a tiny bit of heat, but not too much.
Sixth, use the answes that other people made to your question.
Seventh, UNDERCLOCK your processor by a TINY little bit, (extra emphasis on tiny). It has more to do with performance, but well, it helps a bit.

1 keep it on a desk not on a bed
2 dont put anything under it like a big book
3 do not use it on your lap i know they call it a laptop but i can tell you the fents need all the air they can get
the best place for a laptop is on a desk there not that good
and if its a dell laptop you can have on 100 firewalls with your anti virus but the news is all the firewalls will not stop the laptop burning out

I sure hope that it's not a dell one. You know they recalled one of the model back. Because the battery was over heating and causing fires. It would not hurt if you would take your laptop in where you purchase it and have it checked out. Good-Luck !

One way to keep your laptop from overheating is to buy an insulator which the laptop can sit on to allow air to circulate. Also, do not place it on fabrics, because lint gets trapped in the vents and aggravates the computer even more.

If you can't afford a cooling pad do the other suggestion. Get one of those little $5 fans at Wall-Mart and use it to blow air under it.
For my wifes laptop I went to the Office Supply store and bought some 1/8 in thick, stick on, no-skid pads and put one on each corner. One of those $5 fans set on low blows just enough air and keeps it nice and cool.

if its a dell you bought in the last two years.. it's probably the battery that's under recall right now. 1.7 million of them to be exactish.. they're sony batteries and they're being replaced.

lol good first answer
try having it lifted above the surface so that air can flow under it
a fan would also help
most effective would be cutting down on usage time
