Algebra is the basis for nearly everything ... without it you couldn't post this silly question because there would be no computer.

Some aspects of algebra are going to actually be used in real life for example: conic sections are going to be used when trying to become an engineer. Leibniz and Newton Created Calculus in case you were wondering and no they were not high or drunk, they were trying to find ways to calculate the real world around them. Science was like myspace (everyone had to have one or know about it). Everybody wanted to know about the real world around them and how it was put together. You can approach the problem by saying it makes no sense or you can look deeper into it by trying to find a way that algebra would relate to your life. I would give you more examples, but I think you get the point.

What is the point of asking? Your issue is with mathematics or problem solving, not algebra. Algebra is kind of a system of abbreviations used to save us from writings many words in expressing mathematics concepts. If you dislike it, then you may need to write, for e.g.,
3 plus 5 times the number of apples equals 93,
instead of
Let x be the number of apples, 3+5x=93

An alga-bra is an article of clothing worn by green water plants to keep their leaves in place.
Algebra, on the other hand, is used in all areas of science. You couldn't do chemistry, physics, or biology without it. You study the principles of algebra abstractly first, then when you take science courses you will use algebra like crazy and it will save your life.

If you're interested in a career in any tech job, like medicine, or something like psychology or social sciences, which require analyzing data and statistics.
Nursing, biology, auto production, banking--or just figuring out how long it will take two hoses to fill up a swimming pool.

Algebra is incredibly useful. We couldn't study chemistry or physics with out. However, if you want a more practical application, check my source link. It shows how we use algebra (often without even realizing it's algebra) to choose a cell phone plan.

The point is
Find unkown values
Create formulas
Its one of the most useful of all math parts, the world would not have advanced, if this didnt exist.

I agree it made no sense to me, I was always asking what is x and y? When I took electronics we did equations for example they would ask what is the voltage etc. At least voltage is something we all can understand but "x" what is that???
