The cast themselves sing along to it.

The show usually opens with the theme song, "In the Street," by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell of the band Big Star. It was initially sung by Todd Griffin, but beginning with the second season, the song was performed by the band Cheap Trick, whose version is referred to as "That '70s Song (In the Street)." The lyrics are as follows:

Hanging out, down the street

The same old thing, we did last week
Not a thing to do, but talk to you
We're all alright! We're all alright! Hello Wisconsin!

which differs slightly from Cheap Trick's version.

It is stated on the official That '70s Show website that Steven Hyde yells "Hello Wisconsin!" at the end of the theme song heard on television in season one only. In later seasons, it would appear to be yelled by Michael Kelso - If it is indeed Kelso, then in season 8's opening titles (Going around the circle), the line is yelled by Kelso, and perpetually stoned Leo looks around as if he heard something. Only on the song's full-length recording can you hear Robin Zander, lead singer for Cheap Trick, say "Hello Wisconsin!" which was originally recorded for the song.

In the first season, the lyrics were the same except that instead of shouting "We're all alright!" twice, "Whooa yeah!" is heard.

Kurtwood Smith's intro for season 8.The final line ("We're all alright!") is inspired by the chorus to the Cheap Trick song "Surrender

That '70s Show
Do you find yourself head banging with Kelso, Jackie, Donna, Eric, Fez and Hyde at the beginning of That '70s Show? It's no wonder with the catchy intro by rock band Cheap Trick titled That '70s Song. If you like some of the other tunes the gang boogies to, you can pick up one of two soundtracks from the show. Its an old tune by Cheap Trick and the title is something about parents...like "weird parents" or "the parents are out tonight" or maybe "that 70s song" I dunno....anyway, it is Cheap Trick. They did, "I want you to want me" "Dream Police" and some other popular tunes in the 70s-80s

Theme Song
Lyrics

Big Star's "In the Street" (1972) is the song that the "That 70's Show" theme song is based on.

"In the Street" by Big Star

Hangin' out
Down the street
The same old thing
We did last week
Not a thing to do
But talk to you
Steal the car
And Bring it down
Pick me up
We'll drive around
Wish we had
A joint so bad
Cross the street light
Out past midnight
Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah
Hangin out
Down the street
The same old thing
We did last week
Not a thing to do
But talk to you

Live upstairs
The musics loud
So we don't care
Nixon's gone
But rock lives on
Alright!
We're still rockin'
In Wisconsin
Oh yeah!
We're still rockin'
In Wisconsin
That's right!
Steal a car and
Drive on down
Pick me up
And we'll drive around
Not a thing to do
But talk to you
woo woo yeah!
