Well, as you saw, if they had just gotten past the Argentinians, with all the upsets, we could have gone deep into the WC playoffs. Mexico has more raw talent than Portugal and we see what THEY did. We probably could have dealt with the French and then, who knows. But the point is we DIDN'T beat the Argentinians and last time (in 2002) when it was a easy "gimme" against the gringos, well we didn't beat them either (corrupt referee or no). And before that, (in 1998) it was another 2nd. round loss to weak German side.
1994 and another knock out in the 2nd. round this time by Bulgaria (BULGARIA!!!???!!!) and on and on the story goes.
Something needs to change fast or this is going to be the same story in 2054, the headline will read -
"Mexico upset 3-1 by Basque Republic in second round, holds record at 17 consecutive 2nd. round knock outs in World Cup."
Yes, they will need (and benefit from) much more Euro experience than ever before. These kids who won the under 17 cup, like Vela and Dos Santos, are not only talented, they are WINNERS, perhaps they can help to wash out the constant stench of defeat from the Mexican locker room.
The Mexican team has a big problem with "heart" or "guts" or "desire" or something in that area. They simply haven't had "what it takes" to get the job done!
I didn't much like the Argentinians' bad sportsmanship after their loss to Germany, nor that of Zidane or Matazarri. But you know, I would rather have the embarassment of being an Italian, Argentinian or even Frenchman and having at least a World Cup and a real record of tough competition like they all do, than have to listen to any more, "the ref was unfair" or "hey, at least we played real good against Argentina didn't we?"
Those countries may have to appologise for the way their players ACT, but they sure as Hell don't have to appologise for how they PLAY! They don't accept defeat easily, we do! Therefore we seem to suffer it (defeat) a LOT more! I don't know the solution, if its Hugo Sanchez, destroy the current FMF, go with the new kids, more Euro experience or maybe we should all go to the airport and shower the team with rotten fruit and vegetables every time they lose, I don't know, but we need to change SOMETHING fast that is for sure!
(or else in 2010 you will be reading - "Sunning upset for Mexico 2-0 loss in 2nd. round to Fiji!")

After a month-long feast of the beautiful game, the world cup will culminate with a rematch of the fantastic Euro 2010 Final between France and Italy. If I said that one team used a strong defense, bruising midfielders, and an opportunistic attack to score goals, which team would I be describing? Most folks would say Italy, of course. But not this time. The French have tempered their usual attacking style with more defensive gameplans. It hasn’t been pretty, but it sure has worked. On the other hand, the Italians have played with great flair at times, and their ability to shut down attacks was elevated to an art form, exemplified by their virtuoso performance in the semi-finals.
The best part of the final is that we get to see the greatest player of the last 10 years leave the game on the biggest stage. I don’t really have an emotional stake for either team, but as I told my wife last night, I will root for France because I want Zizou to go out a champion. She will be rooting for Italy because “they’re the best looking team in the tournament.” I don’t think she means their style of play, though.
And a touch of trivia for you folks. France and Italy last met in a world cup in 1998, at St. Dénis, in the quarterfinals. A PK win by france after a 0-0 draw. My question to you is… what stadium was the venue for their previous world cup meeting?

I don't think any team is allowed a pass or bye straight into QF. If they do get "past" the second rd., let's just say they better crank it up. At least their players are now playing in Europe which will help them improve.
As far as having godo luck as hosts, ALL teams do well as hosts bar maybe Spain in '82.
