I nod to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Sarah McLachlan, and Nickleback.

Of course I left out U2. UK rockers seem to go on forever don't they? Why not us? Just the divas do here.

Nirvana, Metallica (if you don't consider them too old), Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Matthews, and perhaps Matchbox 20...

Right, because everyone covets (?) Elton John. Personally, don't like his music, don't own anything by him, and always laugh at his foolishness when I think back to his giganitic Donald Duck costume.

That being said, there are so few artists who are going to be remembered. And likely none of them will be actively recording or performing in 30 years. Innovators, like Chuck D and Public Enemy, and the other true talents of early rap should be remembered. Great songwriters, like Alicia Keys and Norah Jones.

Rock, unfortunatly, is in a glut. No strong contenders to the likes of Elvis, the Beatles, Hendrix, and the Who are out there now. The closest would be the likes of Metallica and Kiss, with massive fan bases, but with music never quite rising above a B+ level. Songwriting and chemistry have given way to studio over-production (Def Lepard and Nirvana), and innovation has been replaced with format programming.

You know, I actually met Elton John when he was first starting out. Do you know that he used to wear farmer's coveralls as a gimmick?

His bus was coming into Toronto for his concert, and Elton had the driver stop at a Becker's store to pick up sodas and gum and stuff. I was there buying milk with my older sister. She was the one who was a fan of his, and she actually got to talk to him for awhile.
