There is no such thing as a cheap Dell. You'll put over $2,500 into one and it'll die 5 months later and the expensive "extended warranty" that you bought turns out to be a total rip-off. Laptop wise, Dell is not the way to go. Their power supply is poorly set up and breaks constantly (not just in mine, it's the most common problem) and everytime it breaks you have to pay $200 to mail it back to be fixed (no, it's not covered in the warranty) plus, their service fee ($50) and whatever new parts they decide to throw in (50-150) Not to mention, and feel free to look it up, Dell is known for purchasing the absolute cheapest parts to piece together and fix computers. Each time I mailed mine back to be fixed, I paid at least $300 to get it fixed. I mailed it 4 times. For what I'd paid in repairs, I could've purchased a brand new laptop. After the 4th time, they told me that the motherboard was shot from being fixed too many times, and I'd need to purchase another one ($500, and no, THIS wasn't covered in the wonderful $400 3 year extended warranty that I purchased. A lot of fine print.) Keep in mind, this wasn't an cheap computer. I paid $1,300 for it, not including the warranty and the repair costs.
If you don't want to take my word, ask anyone who works at a Best Buy or other well known electronic stores. They won't even bother touching one if you take it in to be fixed.
Go Sony Vaio and you won't be disappointed. Their warranties are great, not to mention the picture is awesome. My brother also has an HP notebook that he's had for 5 years and it still runs wonderfully.
