The best way is to do the problems in the book. Even if you understand trhe material if you cannot apply it you will not do well. I've taken quite a few chemistry classes and I found that when I didn't do practice problems, I never did as well on the exams.

I feel your pain. I am a bioengineer, and in college that means being forced through lots of classes irrelevant to your interests just because the field is so interdiciplinary. I was interested in MEMS and tissue engineering; they decided I had to go through all sorts of chemistry. How I survived:

Pay close attention in lecture. Take careful notes, but be sure you're not just copying. Write them down your OWN way, so that you comprehend.

Ask questions. The material can be hard, so come up with specific questions to ask the instructor.

Read the book. Yea, the book can be dull, but it is almost always helpful.

Do lots of practice problems. This is extremely important. Stuff you don't understand often becomes obvious when you start doing problems. Do them as much as you can, w/o checking the solutions immediately (make yourself sweat it out a bit), and mark everything you don't understand. The next day, go over the questions with the teacher. Again, be specific w/ your question. Instructors hate the "I don't know how to start this" type of question, because it means you haven't even tried.

If you're not into science, just realize, chemistry is very important. Think of it as a language. It is window into the underlying foundations of the universe.
