I don't mean the water storage part for flushing. I mean the water in the bowl where the poo and pee goes.

It's a water trap, that blocks sewer gasses from coming into the home.

All the drains have a 'P' trap, to hold some water, and block gases.

so it can be flushed down the toilet. without it, most would be stuck to the bowl and stink in no time. even the new bowls out use lower water but high jet power to clean the bowl during the flush.

It forms a barrier to the odors in the sewer. They cannot pass thru the water and into the room.

It blocks the sewer gas from coming up the plumbing. Plus it makes that soothing plop sound for your poop.

it won't smell as bad. and it's easier to "wash off." can you imagine poop just sliding down the sides and sitting there until you flush? yuck.
