To incorporate, you would contact the Secretary of State.

I posted links for you in the source box pertaining to starting a business in California.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Small Business Start-up Kit for California by Peri Pakroo, Barbara Kate Repa
* How to Start a Business in California by Entrepreneur Press

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Start by checking the California Secretary of State website (see below). You will most likely need to create some articles of incorporation, pay some fees, get a business TIN from www.irs.gov and name some officers and declare some shares.
Consult a tax person, sometimes incorporating is not the best way to go. Have you considered an LLC?

The best way, and most logical, is to go to an attorney. They prepare all the necessary documents and file them with your state. You might want to consider an LLC instead. That stands for Limited Liability Company. You have the protection of a corporation without all the hassels. A corporation requires separate tax returns, you must have officers for your corporation, and, in Georgia, there are specific requirements that you must meet annually. Check out an LLC instead. Cheaper, easier, quicker and provides you with protection against personal liability.

In NY, we have a DBA (Doing Business As). Incorporation would be for a nonprofit.

What you need to do is call your local city hall and get more information. Use your phone book.

See a lawyer. It's actually pretty simple but you need the proper guidance.
