Someone in my office (who I thought I had a friendship with) has accused me of spreading rumors about her and a male coworker of having an affair. Apparently there is a 3rd party involved who has told my "friend" that I have spread this rumor.
There is no way that I am going to let someone smear my name into a rumor that has resurfaced from what I hear is a rumor that came up a year ago, & now it has my name attached to it. Mind you, I have only been working there for 6 mos...Is this an HR issue?

First I would try and resolve it with this "friend" and see how that goes. If you cannot reach a satifactory result then go through the proper channels to try and get this matter resolved. As a last resort, depending on the size of your company then contact your Human Resource department and see if they can help you and the "friend" come to a complimentary agreement.

Its an issue from high school. Unless asked by a person than has the power to hire and fire you, I would just ignore it. You go there for a paycheck not to make friends. Do the friend making on your own time. It works better that way.

Yes, take this to HR, explain that you've heard this, have nothing to do with it, and want that known, and further explain that you try to keep to yourself and work with the others as a team member.
