In an age when rock and roll was dominated by black acts, the Beatles came in and basically took over. They gave the white kids of the day something to rock to (which was inevitable). Brian Wilson thought the Beach Boys were going to be the next hot commodity, but John and the boys stepped in and were like "yoink!"

At the time, the Beatles were one of the first bands to actually write their own songs. As with any genre, the fact that they were "different" helped them appeal to the youth market. They had long hair. They wore tight clothes. They gave something to the kids to rebel with. I think that's why they were popular at the time. Why are they still so popular? I think that has to do with the inherent musical talent possessed by John, Paul, and George (sorry, Ringo). The three of them were all incredible songwriters who wrote such different types of songs that one of them was bound to appeal to any listener.

I'd say that it was their marketablilty, and timing of reaching a new market ( the US). I imagine that their press agents worked around the clock before they arrived here. And people here were at a point (musically) of wanting something different. The Beatles fit the bill.

Probable because when the beatles started out their kind of music was looked down on by most people, just like Elvis. It was a new kind of music, they were pioneers.
