Attention focused by media and groups all over the country. The push to educate the kids still in high school, and to demonstrate that hate crimes are not the answer. I think also the tougher laws on hate crimes, and the stiffer penalties have all been a positive impacting thing as well.

I think television (one person spoke of MTV) has been a major factor for the younger people, and they are the ones to reach if we want our future to improve. The news did a huge push, and that seemed to really put things out there. And with Matthew Shepard, that put a face with the crime. I think that was the "good" that came out of something so horrific.

I think any supposed "increased awareness" is artificial, as "hate crimes" per se are a somewhat tautological definition.

If a white guy shoots a black guy because he catches the black guy sleeping with his wife, that would probably find its way into the "hate crime" category.

The problem is, it's not necessarily. It's doesn't have to be a hate crime, any more than a white kid robbing a black guy's store is a hate crime. If we're going to get super technical, all murders could be arguably considered "hate crimes". After all, why do you kill somebody if you don't hate them?

The idea that a white guy killing a black guy (or vice versa) deserves a special distinction from white people killing other white people or black people killing other black people is ludicrous.

All it's done is give the legal system another thing to argue about - motivation for the crime. The motivation, however, should be irrelevant (and historically, it has been) other than to prove intent.

Once intent is proven, the sentence should be handed down without regard to what the court feels the motivation may have been, as that's something that can't typically be known.

I think you should watch Bowling for Columbine, it talks about how America is obsessed with violence and weapons. My personal opinion is that its the media, they make such humongous strides at showing violents things in news or on tv or movies.
