The President speaks to people all day - but they are people who work for him and work for other people who work for him. And the way all of those people get ahead is by answering questions the way the people ahead of them want to have it answered. So there's a minimum on reality and maximum on guessing what the powers that be want to hear. All the people who work there have devoted their lives to slaving away in the DC game, which basically means they are hypersensitive to which way the winds are blowing and have gotten ahead by correctly calling - on a minute by minute basis- which guy inthe room will carry the day -and how to hitch their wagon to his as fast as possible.

And anyways, even if that weren't so, the people the President talks to people who literally live, eat, and breathe work. And their world becomes the office and papers and spin and wins and losses and perception. So what they see is not what you see in your daily life. And they get sucked into a very insular world - where most everyone else is connected tothe govenrment in some way and their future is tied the future of the man in office. so it's not reality as most Americans live it, day to day. Even if those peopole spent 15 years advising a Governor of a small state and were out with the people everyday the minute you get to Washington in that kind of job you live in a bubble of special access ID's, security clearances, 12 bars, 26 restaurants, and a couple neighborhoods, and a social world where everyone else is equally driven. It's not normal, but it seems so.

Have you ever heard of "face time?" It's the true currency of DC. Money doesn't motivate people in Washington. Power does. Access does. If you know the guy who knows the man, you are one step ahead of the guy who only knows you. There are some White House staffers who get five minutes a week of face time with POTUS and spend the rest of the week gloating over it.

I know, I used to work in the Senate. This is how it works. The best, most in tune politicians are the ones who hire people BECAUSE they will disagree with them and encourage their staffs to be free thinkers. Politicians who hire people who give them the answer they want to hear cause problems for the rest of us (which is my personal opinion about what is wrong at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue today.)

First and foremost, it's not the people, it's his supporters the monetary ones. These are usually the big corporations and wealthy donors that not only have influence with him but also with congressmen and senators. Next it's to his fellow party members who can make or break him with their support. And then lastly, you might think it's you but no. It's to the large associations represents blacks, hispanics, asians, at the national and local level. That's seriously where you play a role.

The President speaks to markets. That's why he needs a speechwriter and can't really ever be trusted to speak candidly.
