Is there a method of instruction where I could learn to play in a reletavily short period of time. I don't expect to become a professional, but I just want to learn to play for fun.

hmmmmmm... if you have a local sheet music store, find out if they have any recommendations for teachers who work with adults. Or if you have junior college or even a university nearby with a music program, find out who the piano instructors are.

What do you want to play? If you want to just kinda "jam," I would suggest learning to read music (that doesn't take too long, really) and learning chords. This won't let you play Beethoven, but it will help you fake stuff.
