apparently it refers to printing.. if 9=em, then half is ens.

This is one of those clues or type of clues that you need to have worked a lot of crosswords to understand the peculiar language in which they're written. The clue "half of nine" would be more properly written: half of "nine", with the emphasis put on the word nine, the key here being the word (as opposed to the numerical concept), but that would make it too easy. The word "nine" has 4 letters, 2 of which are "n", so "n" makes up 50% of the letters in the word nine. In "crossword-ese", the letter n is spelt "en", there are two of them, so "ens".
