The Democratic party today has gone hard left from the days of JFK. People like Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Michael Moore, etc are now leading the party with a very liberal agenda. The media has been all too willing to fabricate stories & facts in order to forward that agenda.

When did the Democratic party start turning hard left and why ?

I've just read through about 25 answers to this question, and I am shocked!! (It takes a lot to shock this old lady, you'd best believe!)

First, I have to agree with all of the people who said that the Dems are, by no means, "far Left". If anything, I think they have been too moderate, too soft, lately! For "far Left", you might look at Communism. But certainly our present Democratic leaders are NOT "far" anything. (Jimmy Carter???? Come on. Is Habitat for Humanity a socialist plot???)

Secondly, being liberal is NOT being far Left. (And, while I'm at it: "LIBERAL" is not, not, not a bad word. Being liberal means to be open to change, being able to consider more than one solution to a problem, being willing to try new things. It's not a put-down [I'm proud to be a very liberal Liberal]; it's just a word that designates, in a very loose way, how a person looks at life.)

Third, I am astounded at how vitriolic the answers are! This country was founded on the idea that people would have differing opinions--and that we'd be FREE to express them, look for solutions that were agreed on democratically, and vote the best people for the job into office. So what if we don't all think alike? Try a dictatorship if you want everyone towing the same line.

Fourth, I DO notice a very vocal and exposed "far Right" in the current leadership of the Republican Party, but I don't think that the majority of Republicans "buy" all of that rhetoric.

The media???? They are way too controlled now. What happened to the FREE press?? I don't know what you are watching or reading, but I'd almost welcome a good scandal right now, or a fabrication (just kidding--give me truth and only truth!).
(Besides, Dubya admitted using cocaine--and we can see the results of the brain cells that were killed off by the drug)

Hey! You right-wingers need to get a sense of humor and some love for the game (Politics for beginners: You take things way, way too seriously. ) Play to win (elections, that is), but have some fun and don't be such sore losers.

I agree with you my friend. The democratic party has been hijacked by the far left in response to the GOP getting hijacked by the far right and christian fundamentalists. So now we have a bunch of nuts fighting each other. But there are those of us who are fighting to retake the GOP back from the fundies, the problem is everytime we try we have a million liberals who wont quit cheering on the far left. If there were people trying to take the democratic party from the leftiest instead of cheering them on, mayhaps we could return politics to what it should be. I suggest voting for independants and start forcing the parties to either change or loose all the positions they hold that is for both the democrats and the GOP.

Actually, I agree with the first person.. and you.

Politics has turned extreme in later years, its sad really. Sometimes I think the centrists are the best off.

I'm really not sure what to make of American politics anymore. A lot of Republicans blindly support their party while Democrats are moving farther left, fabricating stories and stuff like that but even when the stories are true, they never act on them in a manner that would get anything done. I call this all the period of stupidity. Because thats what it is. The parties have to learn that its difficult to really try to rally the extremists on your side and win, you have to win the middle. They're the ones that'll push you over 50%.

After the 1968 convention when the delegates through out the moderate delegates from the Midwest and put their own delegates in, then nominating ultra liberal. They of course lost the election but that does not matter so much as keeping control of Dem party with people like Howard Dean. Dem's were able to elect one term Carter and barely elect Clinton on a 3 way split on the first election. Thats it. But they don't care, 40 more years of Republicans.

You can fool the American People some of the time but you can't fool the American People ALL of the time.

America is like a subdivision. There's a consciousness in the air and I really believe the Indipendent will ride this storm out.

Lieberman may have been Democrat but he spoke with fork tongue ... the People saw right through him and saw "The Bush Agenda" and They did something about it.

Of course, we The People were treated to a Terror Plot the very next day, in retaliation ... but I think we're going to be fine. The People are waking up.

You didn't list these fabricated stories? Why?

Judging by the actions of the party, it seems to me they are quite happy with the status quo. They agree with the war even though the republicans call them the "cut and run" Party. Who cut and run on Sadaam the first time? Oh yah, it was a Republican named Bush. Why do you attack the Democratic party in the face of these facts.

Far Left???? I'm laughing. If you can call Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, Jimmy Carter, et al. Far Left, you haven't a clue as to what Far Left really is. I wish that they did have someone who was Far Left. I would be the first on line to vote for him!!!

My answer is that the process began before JFK was president. McCarthyism marginalized the hard left, so they got on board with the Democrats. Then the civil-rights movement turned off the Dixie Democrats so the party had to embrace the ex-communists in order to succeed at the polls.

I think you confuse liberal and being far left! You guys tend to put all Democrats in the same boat so you can claim they are communist!

I doubt that there are many "far left"! Almost all believe the government owes more than the rich tax cuts (the only time in US History tax cuts were given when we were fighting) while the Conservatives cut or eliminate 85 Billion in programs for the elderly and other poor!

It has been a 1 way street far too long! The middle and poor are tired of being the ones the rich steal from!
