I have a wireless router that I can connect to using my wireless connection, but if I try to connect it directly to my computer it won't see it.

I've tried disabling the wireless connection
I've rebooted both my computer and the router a few times
I've reset (discarded all settings) my router a few times

Nothing.

I'm trying to have a direct (wired) connection so I can update the firmware (software on it).

Any suggestions?

It's a Dlink DI-624.

I can connect to the internet with:
Just the ADSL modem (with cable) or
the router (wireless) which then goes through the modem.

I repeat: I can connect to the router wirelessly, but not through cable.

The cable's fine because I'm using it to connect to the internet RIGHT NOW.

My computer's fine.
My ethernet connection's fine.

Now, please, if you have no clue... don't answer. If you know what's going on... tell me in full detail.

I'm just trying to get the router's software updated (which I have on my computer), and I can't do it through the wireless connection.

I can't just go to the site and get the router to grab it itself - I have to download it to my computer.

The thing is... if I do go ahead with the uploading of the firmware through the wireless connection, it'll ruin the router.

It's the same reason you can't format your computer while Windows is running... it needs to have itself to run the change which changes itself.

At the very least it's a logic loop.

Sounds like maybe the network card is it enabled in network connections? Also try to go to start>run>cmd and hit enter you'll get a dos prompt then type in ipconfig. The default gateway should be the same as the ip address for the router...if it is then the nic sounds like it is working if it is not the same as the router ip address the nic probably isn't working properly.

Based on what you are describing, the cable you are using to connect to the router is the wrong type.

If the router is of the type that has an integrated switch built in, you will need a straight through ethernet cable to be able to connect your computer. But if it doesn't, you'll probably need a crossover ethernet cable to hook up.

check drivers on nic, make sure they are correct. Or try getting a safety pin, look on back of router, there is a reset button, hold it in for ten seconds, unplug router and plug back in. Last option is do a google for "winsockfix", download it and run it.

You dont need to have it wired to the router, just use the computer that you installed the router software on, the manual will tell you what address to type to get to your router, there should be an update link on the page.

NIC card required, and proper cable (not the crossover computer to computer type). by the way dlink has some unresolved security issues: go to 'grc.com/securitynow' and listen to episode 52.

Is this your first time to use the wired connection?
If so, check the NIC's config settings Advanced tab and make sure the speed/duplex setting is set to auto detect.
And make sure it is not disabled.

This is probably a dumb question to answer you with, but, does your computer have a wireless card to receive the signal?
