I worked in retail in a town heavily populated with Indian immigrants. MANY of them, not all, insisted on getting discounts, and often tried to trick me into thinking I'd offered them one. Is this part of their culture? It put me on the spot several times and made me uncomfortable. I was just an employee and had no authority to give discounts, but they often INSISTED.

It happens to me, too, at the place where I worked. I think that it has a lot to do with the culture...one, they may be used to dickering for products in their country (I have no clue as the the fact in this), Two, it's quite possible they're cheap. Three, they have learned that a lot of business say "the customer is always right" and since they've gotten away with insisting on getting discounts before, they're going to keep on trying.

May I suggest in the future, just tell them you have to okay all discounts with your supervisor, then turn on the light (if you have one) or get on the phone, or call for the super however you do that and make them wait. They will probably be uncomfortable having to answer to your super and will most likely quit asking.

Plus, that takes it off your shoulders and lets them know you are always going to call for the super and not take it on yourself.

They are either expecting something they thought they were entitiled to or they are hitting you up because they think you are young and inexperienced. Either way, your boss should clear that up for you.

And by the way, a discount for what?

For being a foreignor?

I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!

Asians are the same way but ruder, its part of the culture, Hispanic negotiate too, Americans is the only country who is afraid to ask for discount, unless at a flea market, garage sale, or buying a car. never hurts to ask if someone will discount it for you, worse they will say is no. don't sweat it, just be firm and say no..

i can say this is not a part of their culture but they definitely go in for best bargain if it is there and perhaps the shop must have offered them discounts which may have prompted them to ask for it again and again or on asking for it the shop must have given them discount and this news must have been spread in the whole area of Indian immigrants which has prompted them to ask for it. and money saved is money earned

Oh Boy, that is so funny, my boss whom I love dearly is Indian.
BABY BIRDS, don't cheep so loudly! CHEEP,CHEEP,CHEEP,
Once you get past that little imperfection, they are wonderful, kind people. SORT OF!
We went to a business conference today.
I drove, $60.00 in Gas
He paid tolls,$6.00
He collected enough free pens for the office for a year.
I gave free advice, that I am qualified to give!
He got free stuff.
I got embarrasses
He got free beer.
I got to be designated driver 200 miles home.

O.K. so they are cheep, it is inherent, Who cares!

At least folks cannot make fun of my Scottish ancestry as THRIFTY anymore, the Asian Indians have my dad beat, hands down!

Yes, it is culture. It's a barter system for them no matter what...try having a yard sale in upper Arlington, VA!!!

I've learned a thing or two from 'em....I've bartered a couple items down a few bucks, just imitating the style....it's kinda cool....(for the buyer)....

In India the prices are always put to be bargained with so they think the same ways are used here

Because they're used to shopping in bazaars, where there are not set prices...everything is negotiable. I've seen one in a McDonald's once, bargaining his a*s off, trying to get a Big Mac for a dime cheaper.

It is cultural. I have found the same from Italians. I have learned from them not to be shy about asking for special pricing myself.
