I read that individuals who sleep for greater periods of time each night tend to be more productive and ultimately more intelligent. ( I am not in this category... I check it twice...LOL)

To help you decide your dilemma, I also looked up a few sites on normal values and finally found this page.. It includes a generalized advice for parents of children of all ages - he following line caught my attention.

"Since teens still need about nine hours of sleep a night, according to the National Sleep Foundation..."
(entire article here: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=53290 )

The next article is an argument for altered school hours in order to accomidate the special need of sleep required by teenagers. It's very interesting and I could easily find reasons to support this idea. And best for you, additionally, the article concludes with some very good tips for teens and for their parents... scroll to the bottom of the page before you decide to exit. (read it here: http://library.adoption.com/Teenagers/Should-Teens-Sleep-In-New-Choices-in-School-Starting-Times/article/3340/2.html )

Healthy kids had this line: "Ideally, a teenager should try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, allowing for at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep." The full article was useful, too. (read here: http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/general/sleep/sleep.html )

Good luck,

for a 12 and 14 years old, I would say like 8 to 10 hours. Send the to bed around 9:30 10 p.m. I think that is a good bed time.

I would say 9pm. When the oldest turns 16, then 1030 or 1100.

They can get their homework, chores, and hygiene done and still get a good amount of sleep.

When I was their age on the other hand, I couldn't go to sleep unless all the above was done. For instance if I procrastinated and didn't finish my work until midnight, I would pay for it by being sleepy in school. Then I wouldn't do it again! lol

just make sure they are in their rooms by eleven. At this point in their life and from now on all they need is 8 hours of sleep. if they get less well they will be okay. but i would get them in there rooms by eleven pm at the latest and weekends let them stay up longer as long as they have their work done.. Good Luck.
