I have 3 daughters. My first one went everyday like clockwork. My second was irregular but went every 1 to 3 days. My third one had the pasty bowel movements and they would come every 3 to 6 days. I was concerned and made an appointment with my pediatrician. She said that it is common for babies to do that. I was shocked. But, she turned out just fine with no medical problems and now is regular. If she'd go past two days I would feed her some prunes with cereal or Apple/Prune juice. That seemed to get her going. Also, bananas always made her go for some reason. Bananas with my other two would keep them from going. I'd try different things. I just reread your question and wonder if there is a connection with my third daughter. I breast fed her until she was 4 1/2 months. She had trouble with watery diarrhea so my doctor suggested taking her off breast milk and putting her on Alimentum advance. If that is what your son is taking that's probably the reason. It's made from corn. Ground up corn can get rather pasty now that I think about it. Good luck to you and God bless!

I would suggest switching formula, possibly try the Goodstart Supreme. I have 3 kids and with my first two I had them the enfimal high iron formula and my girls would spit up alot and go without bowel movements for days. They also did get constipated at times too. If he is being burped and fed properly I would suggest trying another type of formula and supplementing him with juices and water. This might help him out with being more frequent. If is it not hard then that is a good sign but he should have more bowel movements than that I would think. You can try the trial and error process or else contact your doctor.

If he's spitting up frequently, it's possible that his tummy isn't tolerating the formula. Try Nestle' Good Start Supreme. It's easier to digest. I had to do this for my daughter as she, too, spit up frequently.

As for the constipation...put 1 oz. of Gerber prune juice mixed in with his formula. Works like a charm!

Child should be having bowl movements everyday.
As for the spitting up try keeping him upright after feedings and make sure that he burps. The liquid could just be getting caught on top of a gas bubble and then forced out when he does burb. Takes breaks from feeding to try to get him to burb and then resume feeding.
I would defiantly talk to your doctor about both issues.

hi, if u r ONLY breast feeding him, then therez nothing to worry about. doc says there are no residues in mothers milk. remainings would go out in the form of urine and gas. some kids would have bowel movement once in ten days and all. so don't bother.
also spitting is a part of their growth style. if u think hez getting enough for his tummy, then spitting also is not a problem.
but check his weight once in a month. app he should have gained 1 kg. then he should be active and have undisturbed sleep. if these 3 criteria are ok, then u don't be worried. just enjoy bringing up him.
if u r not breast feeding and depending on formula, then surely go to his doc for advice!

My doctor told me to try pear juice mixed up in her bottle. It is like what prune juice does to us. They did a study in a neonatal unit and this was the only thing that helped these babies. It works for my 4 month old.. You give him 2 tablespoons of pear juice to every 2 ox of formula he gets for the first 24 hours. Then it is every other bottle for day to and three. Then 2 daily there on out. You can also try Enfamil AR it is made for babis who spit up frequenly. This helps my daughter so much.

Definitely take him to his pediatrician.

That being said... our daughter didn't have regular bowel movements until she started solid foods at 6 months. Our ped told us to give her a mixture of half prune juice and half water (which I had a problem with and which didn't really work for anyway) and to use suppositories on her. We used child suppositories cut in half the long way, one half per poo. She would only go once every three or four days.

The ped told us that while this isn't entirely normal, it isn't unheard of and is really nothing to worry about. Still, take your son to the ped and talk to them about it. They are there to address your concerns.

That is normal for an exclusively breastfed baby, but I'm not sure about a formula fed baby. By the way, it's BOWEL movement....not BOWL.

Take him to the doctor, just in case it would signal a bigger problem. He could be dehydated too, if his stool is pasty rather than solid. Take him in.
