Some medications lose their effectiveness after the expiration date. The rate of degredation may be slow, but it is possible for other chemical changes to occur. You should never take a medication after the expiration date unless it is OK by your phsyician or a licenses pharmacist. A quick call to a pharmacist would answer this question with certainty.

For most medicines, they begin to lose potency, especially if they have been opened. It could be dangerous if you were taking something like Benadryl for an allergic reaction and the medicine didn't work. Most prescription drugs are the same way, they become ineffective. Although rare there are some compounds that could actually become more dangerous after the expiration date. It is best to just throw them out and get fresh meds. If you keep a first aid kit, you should go through it at least once a year and replace any old meds and bottled water.

The expiration date is an arbitrary date that the manufacturer guarantees the effectiveness of their product. Some meds do become toxic after the date but benadryl is not one of them.

Benadryl side effects

Stop taking Benadryl and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Benadryl and talk to your doctor if you experience
- sleepiness, fatigue, or dizziness;
- headache;
- dry mouth; or
- difficulty urinating or an enlarged prostate.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Not much. It usually loses a little bit of its strength, but its generally still good enough to use for a while after it expires. Kindof like milk.. cause milk is still good for a week after it expires. Expiration dates are worthless- just corporations wanting to make extra money off of you. Dont OD or anything. Thats NEVER a good idea.

You throw it away. After expiration several things can happen to a medicine. It may lose its potency. Sometimes it may undergo some changes which may backfire. So the answer is, just throw it away!

In some cases, nothing happens. In others, the medicine loses its strength. In still others, some of the liquid evaporates and makes it stronger. It's not a good time to "try it and see what happens."
