If I were to apply for a job that required typing, how many words per second should I be able to type in order to be competative?

It very much depends on the job. For administrative assistant-type jobs, you probably need to type more than 60 wpm, even 70-75 is much better. 30-45 wpm for customer service or entry type jobs when you're talking on the phone at the same time.

You mean words per minute. If you want a clerical or administrative job that requires typing you need at least 45 wpm to be competitive. If it is a job with a lot of typing they will want 65 or more. That is just a minimum requirement for these types of jobs, but it won't get you hired. They will look mostly at your past work references and see if your actual on-the-job past experience fits the position, and how much relevent experience you have had in the last 5 years. I tried getting an administrative job for about a year and it was extremely competitive. I eventually decided to just start my own business.

I type 80 wpm. I've been typing since I was 12, so 20 yrs of typing, I'd better be fast

Try for BPO job for non-voice. Their they are considering your typing speed. It should be min 35-40 wpm. If it is more than that you may have chance to work and one more things you should have accent English ( I don't have ).

Try some typing soft wares it may help you to increase typing speed

35 wpn is the standard, but 45-50 wpm will get you noticed. Good Luck
