Definately Spanish. Spanish speakers are the fastest growing segment of the US. Whatever you study you will encounter Spanish only speakers. In addition, unless you intend to work in Japan, I doubt you will ever use Japanese. Think about how close we are to Mexico and South America, Spanish speaking countries. Now consider how far away Japan is.......

With respect to your studies, it probably doesn't matter, since most work in this field (as in most fields) is published in English. Spanish might be easier, and Japanese might be more interesting.

Where are you going to do your research? Japanese is probably better if tsunamis and quakes are in your future, but if you are studying Paraguayan red tree fungus, Spanish would sure help!
