You have a malfunctioning Vehicle Speed Sensor. It does not need a new transmission, geez, why does everyone think the worst for a simple repair. The previous answer is due to embellishment problems, some say this, some say that, but no proof to back it up. The Taurus transmission is more dependable than a lot of other vehicles I have seen. Take the GM 4L60E for example. I own two vehicles with these transmissions and I would rather have a taurus trans. I replaced three GM transmissions in one vehicle, in three years, but I still enjoy the vehicle. The vehicle speed sensor in your Taurus is not working half of the time. Have it checked and repaired. The powertrain control module uses the spped input signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor to tell the transmission when to shift, without this signal the trans is flying blind and has to take a guess at the correct shift point, which leads to weird shift patterns.

Ford Taurus models have transmission problems. Of course, Ford never reported any recalls, and they denied having any reports of problems with the Taurus.
We had a Taurus, it needed two transmissions by 65,000 miles, within 10 years. The car was bought new and serviced according to the instructions in the manual. The first transmission died just after the warranty expired. We had it rebuilt by a reputable mechanic. 15,000 miles later, the transmission started to give us a different set of problems.
I will never buy another Ford since Ford Motor Company has lousy customer service. Their form letter stated that there were no known problems with Taurus transmissions. I Goggled the automotive message boards and discovered that other owners had similar problems.

Yugie 29 is right on the mark. Taurus often have bad vehicle speed sensors, more so in the 3.8 litre versions. The sensors are is very close proximity to the exhaust and that usually causes them to fail. I've repaired many defective vehicle speed sensors in these vehicles. One more thing, if you get the sensor replaced, be sure that whoever does the repair, replaces the heat shield around it, or else you'll be buying alot of speed sensors
