No... I've been playing since the 70's and have always managed to get a Triple Word. I suppose if I tried not to do it, I could still win the game... I usually score 400+, but without the triple words scores, a score of 300 should be good enough to beat some opponents.

Yes. I've managed to win even when my opponent either gets or blocks all the triple words. My husband and and I bought a fancier board lately and will sometimes play the 9-letter game. It moves faster, gives more opportunities for 7-letter words, and we can often make longer words that keeps the board more open. If he's kicking my butt I'll play more defense with tiny words and make a point to not opne anything up.
