The various audio player programs have methods to save file which they "rip" from CDs in .mp3 format. With Windows Media Player, for example, you click on the Tools Tab, Options, Rip Tools tab, and select .mp3 from the dropdown setting (located half way down).
Musicmatch has similar settings, as do most other media player/downloading programs.

In common usage music files are already compressed. I will assume the songs are on a CD and are therefore uncompressed and will not play on a mp3 player.
1. load a music management program like MusicMatch on your PC.
2. adjust MusicMatch to read your CD drive, place a CD in drive
3. click on the recorder function of MusicMatch
4. all the CD tracks now should show up in the playlist window
5. name the album and artist
6. click on songs in the playlist to be converted to mp3, and name them
7. press the record button, MusicMatch will read the CD, convert the songs to mp3 and store them on your hard drive in the Windows folder labeled "my music".

typically, they are in mp3 format when u put them in your computer... if u have your songs on itunes and want to put your music on, say, a dell mp3 player, you have to use the menu (the one with 'file' and 'view' and "edit" and all those) to convert all the files to mp3 (i'd tell you which menu to go to, but i got rid of itunes... i think it's advanced something or other...)
sorry i couldnt help more =(
