Legendary? I don't know; I guess that's a matter of opinion.
Fraud? Certainly not. It would be useful to see something to back up your curiosity about that.
He is a scientist, and he's a very good science advocate and teacher. He does a lot of important work to advance the state of science knowledge in a country which sorely needs it.
Mr. Nye has authored a number of science books for children. He lectures regularly at Cornell University, where he was earlier a student of Carl Sagan. He there acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.
For three years Bill worked for the Boeing Corporation, and designed a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor that is still flying on Boeing 747s. He also worked as a consulting engineer in the 80s, and contributed to the configuration of an A-12 fighter jet for the Department of Justice, where he has a Level 3 security clearance.
He holds several patents. He has received two honorary doctorates, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Goucher college.
He is a Fellow of CSICOP, the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, which does very important work investigating pseudoscience and other time-wasting pursuits which spread misinformation.
He is Vice-President of The Planetary Society, a major not-for-profit organization that has many research projects related to astronomy. (Its board of directors includes astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and director Steven Spielberg, and its advisory council includes astronaut Buzz Aldrin, authors Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke, and astronomer Frank Drake, founder of SETI.)
Though I haven't seen much of his TV show, if he has a comic edge you can attribute that to his early TV experience in comedy in the Seattle area. But there is real substance to Bill; he's no imposter in the science and education worlds. He is deserving of great respect for his achievements... they benefit all of us.
For those who say he is a fraud, do some research before making your insulting claims. *They* are what is fraudulent here.

Who said he is a scientist?
See! If Albert Einstein comes on TV and teaches science, no kid would be interested to watch. To make children get interested in something, you need to understand their expectations. If at all Bill Nye was a scientist, it would have been in child psychology. And he had a good knowledge and interest in science. He clowned around and went on sites to explain children the basics and more of science in the way they would love to see. He is a legend(though may not be legendary *scientist*) that nobody else is able to replace his place in our generation's hearts. We shouldn't call him an imposter as he never tried to cheat anyone. This is my opinion. Arguments are welcome.

Bill Nye IS NOT a scientist, although he pretends to be one! His education and professional work experience is as a mechanical engineer. I have nothing against engineers (I am one), but they are not scientists. If Nye EVER had a claim to be a scientist it would revoked because of a completely faked experiment he conducted on global warming:

You may argue that this was not intended to be a REAL experiment, only a "demonstration", but it WAS intended to influence public opinion and DOES demolish his credibility. He has a response to this critique on his web site; the only problem is it is TOTALLY BLANK!:

Neither. I think that he is a geeky guy that was able to get a t.v. show to entertain kids with science. Anyway there the best things to watch in science class because you can sleep through the whole thing!

He's the real thing. He did a presentation about global warming at my college, last semester. He said he's working on a brand new TV series, too.
