I am leaving on the 22nd of this month anyways. I have already paid $80/$285 of this months rent. I have never defaulted on my rent payment but I am broke this month as school is staring soon and need to save money for books. And my landlady is such a ***** I fear she wouldnt give me back my deposit worth $225. So what will happen if I don't pay the rest of the rent and leave ? Can the court take me to jail or charge me fee or somdthing if I leave without paying the full rent ? I HATE THIS OLD B*****!

No. You cannot be sent to jail for not paying your rent, although this can be classed as stealing. The "old b" as you call her may be in financial straights too. If not she has probably had people skip out leaving her in the red.

Don't pau your rent, loose your deposit, and get a bad name. In Australia you go on a bad tennant list and stay there for seven years - get on this list and it is almost impossible to rent anywhere in the country.

Pay your rent, leave the place in good condition and get your deposit back. Better for everybody.

If you're not paying the $205.00 balance of rent then you know very well that you won't get the deposit back. I hope you're not depending on that for school expenses. I am guessing you're in college so I find it difficult to believe that you don't know that you can't be put in jail for non payment of rent - non payment of credit card bills - non payment of phone or electric bills - BUT - you can be jailed for non payment of state and federal bills - like taxes and non payment of child support. We do not have debtors prisons here and most countries have done away with such. One last thing - no matter how *****y a person normally is they usually purposefully direct the attitude towards people they feel deserve it. Look at yourself and your actions and words over the period of time that you rented there and ask yourself if you gave her any reason to be *****y with you. I am sure you'll find something if you're honest about it. I am sure it does not make you fell better for hating this person. It does you no good whatsoever and, believe it or not, can actually be physically harmfull to you. Anger and hatred literally eat away at the body and mind and takes up more energy (physical and mental) than any excersize regiment you could do - what a waste of your time and energy. If she's that bad then her karma will deal her the justice she deserves and you don't need to giver her another thought - good or bad. Get past it.

If you don't pay your rent in full, they can technically either throw you out or put a lien on your property, so maybe you should get out as soon as you can. They'll probably keep your deposit or most of it (interest for late payment, plus cleaning), so you can forget that...But jail is not an option for civil disagreements and claims. You could face a bad credit report, trouble renting somewhere else since they'll ask your previous rental for a reference, and so on. It would be better for your future to pay your full rent, get back your deposit, have a clean credit and rental report, but that's your choice. Your feelings for the landlord (or lady) have nothing to do with right or wrog here.

Well I hope you are at least giving her a kiss, because you sure are screwing her. You are the one wanting to save money not paying your rent. They won't take you jail, they will just bother you and may take you to small claims court. I certainly wouldn't use them as a reference when you go to rent another place. You are starting life off very shaky in the ethical department.

She probably won't take you to jail. The worst you are probably looking at is loosing the deposit and a bad reference when you try to rent again or buy a new house.

She can't put you in jail, but you are not getting your deposit back if you don't pay the full rent.

I don't think so. My father was a landlord, so I am familiar with the procedure.

If you don't pay your rent, you go to court to pay the rest of your rent and you get evicted. I think that's the worst that could happen to you.

Good luck! (:

I doubt if anything will be done as you essentially paid it, unless you didn't give her a proper notice. But even then! Hey, she may feel the same about you!

Where can you find rent for $285.00?
