Make sure you do the algebraic "sign" operation as you do the addition. The problem can be stated as,
Add a negative 23 to a positive 74, and rewritten like this,
74 + (-23) = 74 - 23 = 51

Another way to look at it, and I hope I don't confuse, is that there is an understood 1 in this problem, and can be seen like this,
74 + (-1)*(23) = 74 - 23 = 51
