Honestly it really does not matter about the make of the laptop. As long as it has all the features u need u can go with any brand. Since i am too in college i do recommend the following in any laptop u buy:
- Make sure it atleast has a Pentium 4 processor or an AMD 3200 or higher.
- Wireless capabilites are a must now a days. But dont worry 98% of all laptops made with in the last year already come with a wireless card built in the laptop.
- CD burner is a must, just incase u need to burn any thing onto a CD-ROM
- Atleast an 80 gig hard drive, anythin smaller and u might regreat it.
- Atleast 512 mb of RAM. PLEASE dont go any lower then this if u plan on doing any bit of multi tasking. Ur laptop will run more fast if u have 512 or more of RAM.
- Monitor size is up to u, i have a 15", and its just fine.
- A Video card is up to u, laptops usually come with an intergrated one, which is fine if u dont plan on doing any major gaming.
Well i hope some of this info helped, because it took a while to type. LOL. GOOD LUCK!!!

All have their good points, but I prefer Gateway. My laptop runs 24/7 and has never had a problem in the year and a half I have owned it.
NOTE: running a laptop 24/7 can damage a laptop badly because of over heating. My laptop has a special optional base I bought (can't remember where I got it) that has 2 fans running all the time to keep it cool. I also reboot at least once a day and turn it off once a month for 24 hours.
IMPORTANT: Whatever laptop you decide on, make sure you get the best extended service policy you can afford. No matter how good the computer, it is worth nothing broken.
Most computer companies have an education discount. I asked Gateway for one and they took 10% right off the top (I was teaching at a university then). I did not even have to send proof.
Check out Consumer Reports for the scoop on how good different laptops are.

It all depends on what exactly you'll be using the computer for. For me a Sony Viao was the best choice because I needed a fast computer with lots of memory, and large screen for my architecture technology major. I spent $1300 on mine, but if you intend on sending and receiving mail and using it for basic things then you can go for a much cheaper model and that will in turn cost hundreds less! FYI I'm selling my 6 month old Sony Viao Laptop for $900 or best offer(slknight772002@yahoo.com or 414-807-1225! Hope my answer helped!

I have a Toshiba Sattellite. I can honestly say that I love it. Never had an HP, but I do know that my parents had an HP and it sucked bad. I've had my computer for about 2 - 3 weeks now and I love it.

I prefer a Dell and I know some colleges have discounts with Dell because they provide all their PC's. You might want to check what your college offers.
