I think it was a little of both. Director Alex Proyas has a knack for duing a dark, sci-fi type of setting that was very efective in both The Crow and Dark City. The mood was very dark and tense, the score helped move the movie along in intensity, and Brandon Lee's performance was spectacular. It is a shame that he died during this because his performance should have led him to stardom for his acting, not his untimely death. I think his performance in this could be better than anything his father, Bruce Lee, ever did.
With that being said, his death probably did attract people to this film but I dont think thats quite as significant as one can think. While people may have seen the movie because of the story involving his death during filming, that does not mean it made it a hit. A hit can only be made if it has a good story/performance to go along with it. Now if everyone went to see it and it was terrible and people hated it, I would contirbute his death to it's box office success. But since it was a box office and critical success I would say it was the superb performance given in the movie, not the death itself.

The movie was amazing and it's by far my favorite movie of all time, I still cry while watching it at times. It's sad that he lost his life making such an amazing film because he would have gone so far after The Crow. And yes the soundtrack is really good!

The sequels without Brandon Lee didn't do well, so we can only assume that it was the grisly nature of his death on the set of the first Crow film that gave it a big opening weekend. Word of mouth would have spread after that to keep it making money. It's a very good comic book adaptation, although it's too sad to watch knowing that the guy actually died making it.

It was a fantastic story of love, hate and redemption.
Its one of the best comic to screen adaptions that remains faithful to its source material.
The supposed sequels didn't have the same impact because
1) They used back similar storylines.
2) the visual direction was not comparable to that in the first film.
3) Brandon has already immortalised the image of The Crow in people's minds. Nobody would accept anything that is less than what he has managed to carry off.

i guess its hard to say. i love the movie simply because it was awesome. i know what happened to him, but it doesnt change the movie, at least not to me. but i'm sure a lot of people watch it/like it just because of what happened to brandon lee while filming. it has to be part of it, because look at the sequels? none of them did as well as the first. so it could be that it was him to drew people in and i think he was the best in the role, even tho the others werent bad. but theres definitely people who watch it for that simple reason he died making it. so its hard to say really. the important thing is to like the movie for what it is, just plainly awesome.

Cool sound track, near perfect camera work.
You do have to remember that 'The Crow' is based on a cult comic novel. It would have been a hit what ever.
And yeh, it would have been good to see Brandon in more films
RIP

Because it`s all about revenge. I don`t think there is one person out there who watched and enjoyed the film (including me) who didn`t enjoy the way the justice and revenge was meted out on their killers. I know if I was to die violently, I wouldn`t say no to getting my own back that way. That's just my personal opinion on things and I`m not saying violence is cool or anything like that.

It would be a combination of everything. The story, the music and the tragedy all contributed to it's success.
