It takes a lot to be an actor. A lot of talent, a great memory, and a lot of intellect in order to understand the character that you're playing and thus play it believably. Plus, a lot of actors went to top colleges in the U.S.

I'm sorry guys, I'm not gonna pick a best answer. I think a lot of people here are right, and I respect everyone's opinion, so it would be really hard for me to pick just one best answer. I understand that actors don't exactly help save the world, but I still think that they should be respected for their craft, just like everybody else, because acting is not just a job, it's a passion, and it's art. Thanks to everyone for answering!

I don't look down on them, but at the same time I think that if you offered just about anyone off the street a few million dollars to play a certain role.....they would probably find a way to be successful really quick. I mean, they work long hours to make the movies or tv shows, and I respect them for that.....but realistically I don't think it's that difficult.

All work as long as it is legal and moral is to be respected and honored.
But I must say I have a weak spot for people who are in the arts and are creative. So I really do love actors and the theater. It's a wonderful to thing to be talented and to be able to make your living at your talent. Also, I think the theater is very special - very moving to see a live performance whether it is serious drama, comedy or a musical. You feel some connection with the actors and it can be a uplifting experience - making you feel and think about this experience even after you leave the theater.
Now for the finale.
Here are the lyrics to There's No Business Like Show Business by Irving Berlin
The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk
Are secretly unhappy men because
The butcher, the baker, the grocer, the clerk
Get paid for what they do but no applause
They'd gladly bid their dreary jobs goodbye
For anything theatrical, and why?
There's no business like show business
Like no business I know
Everything about it is appealing
Everything the traffic will allow
Nowhere could you get that happy feeling
When you are stealing that extra bow
There's no people like show people
They smile when they are low
Even with a turkey that you know will fold
You may be stranded out in the cold
Still you wouldn't 'change for a sack of gold
Let's go on with the show
The costumes, the scenery, the make-up, the props
The audience that lifts you when you're down
The headaches, the heartaches, the backaches, the flops
The sheriff who escorts you out of town
The opening when your heart beats like a drum
The closing when the customers won't come
There's no business like show business
Like no business I know
You get word before the show has started
That your favorite uncle died at dawn
Top of that, your ma and pa have parted
You're broken-hearted, but you go on
There's no people like show people
They don't run out of dough
Angels come from everywhere with lots of jack
And when you lose it there's no attack
Where could you get money that you don't give back
Let's go on with the show
The cowboys, the tumblers, the wrestlers, the clowns
The roustabouts that move the show at dawn
The music, the spotlight, the people, the towns
Your baggage with the labels pasted on
The sawdust and the horses and the smell
The towel you've taken from the last hotel
There's no business like show business
Like no business I know
Traveling through the country will be thrilling
Standing out in front on opening nights
Smiling as you watch the theater filling
And there's your billing out there in lights
There's no people like show people
They smile when they are low
Yesterday they told you you would not go far
That night you open and there you are
Next day on your dressing room they've hung a star
Let's go on with the show
Let's go on with the show

Memorizing and understanding a character? That is all they do?
I can think of a million different jobs that are tougher than that, that actually help society, and get paid a lot less.
Examples: Teacher, Doctor, Lawyer, Nurse, Engineer, Police Officer, Fireman, Farmer, Chef, Should I go on?
I am sure that it is somewhat difficult, but when you compare it to other jobs it does not look so hard does it? And it definitely does not constitute the amount of money they make.
Furthermore, there are only a handful of actors that went to a "top college", and even they went for ACTING!! When you say top college, there are different top colleges for different areas of study. Example: MIT is a top college for engineering, Harvard is a top college for business and law. But the actors that go to these schools do not major in those fields.

I look down on people who have NO clue what they are doing other than the fact that they want to be actors. Mainly, the people who ask really stupid questions here like "how can I be famous".
You're absolutely correct REAL actors do work hard and with little pay off. Most actors are really smart too (again, unlike the people on Y! answers).

Most people think that actors (and actresses) are stupid, because they think that it requires no thinking or hard work, but that's not true. I'm no pro at this, but I've been in my share of plays and I've taken drama classes for about a year. You actually have to be able to put yourself in your characters shoes, and be that character. And you have to act and look the exact way the director wants you to, and you have to memorize a load of lines. I really admire the actors that play really weird roles, because it's even harder to be that person than it is in the typical roles. Actors have an amazing way of telling stories through movies, and it's a shame when people criticize their "stupidity".

Well I am a child actor and I truely beleive that it is really awesome to be in plays but making neat films with my family is alot of work for some reason. I personally do not look down upon actors they truely make me think about my life with their films and comments on their own life. I hope that helps you. Signed, Erin

no. I only look down on actors who like they are gods. (Tom Cruise and Shirley McClain, for example)I am glad talented actors exist. They help make the world a happier place because their entertainment helps take our minds off our troubles. I also love it when they can inspire us to be better people.

I don't look down at actors. I don't look down at lawyers, judges, waitresses...or anyone else. I may not like certain people's attitudes because of their arrogance or rudeness. I don't believe you should look down on anyone...unless you think you're better then they are... and to me that's just plain ignorant

No. I don't look down on waiters, either, unless they are bad at it, which seems to be most acting these days, covered with a lot of loud music and explosions. (I like loud music, but I'm annoyed when it is used to distract you from bad acting.)
