that symbol - I don't feel like opening Word to duplicate it - refers to a microsecond. Micro- is a numeric prefix that refers to 10^(-6), so a microsecond is 10^(-6) seconds, or 0.000001 (1 / 1000000) of a second.

A nanometer is 10^(-9) meters or 0.000000001 (1 / 1000000000) of a meter.
