Engaged and living together, getting married next month.
Accounts:
1 joint checking for all household bills/credit cards
1 joint savings that we both pay into
1 joint mortgage account to make sure that bill is never shorted!
2 personal checking accounts (his, mine) where things like gas for our cars, "fun" stuff we want to get for ourselves, etc. come out of.
The same percentage of our paychecks go into the joint account, so even though he makes more than I do, I'm contributing an equal share. His personal account therefore has more "play money" than mine does, but since he makes more, IMHO that's not an issue.

We travel a lot. We have separate bank accounts. As a former banker, it is easier for me to control. Things like property insurance, cars' insurance, registrations, property taxes, boat registration and insurance--my babies. Grocery --her babies. It is easier to give your wife a credit card to do her own shopping because women have different spending habits from us men. I am not allowed to do anything in the garden except to cut the large trees, and only when she is around. I am not even allowed to buy hoses or greenhouses--zilch, even though I started two of our gardens. My wife, who has convinced herself that she loves flowers more than I do, has taken over every garden and pushed me out. Gardens used ot be my way of relaxing around the house--no more. I have been evicted. I am not worried--I have more time for swimming. We have separate C.D's and our own portfolios. It is better to hedge investments that way.

If you are married you could have a joint acct and without his or her knowledge get an addtl acct and dont say a word--you never know, be prepared!!
Engaged, lived in, and L-T: I say nooooo......hell noooo!!!
Also, one of the major reasons for divorce in the US other than people having affairs is financial problems...

I'm engaged and we keep it seperate. We have intentions of getting a joint to pay the bills with but we will keep our seperate accounts. We feel that way it will keep us from arguing over money and who has more.

Married - separate.
This way we both have control and responsibility over our own accounts. It worked before we were married, so why fix what ain't broke?

Let me tell you it is best till the marraige takes place to keep things seperate. I just went through a messy break up and it was the easiest thing I did have to do.

My partner and I each have our own accounts, and we have one joint one for household expenses (including stuff like vacations as well).
