what is happening is its loosing vacuum to the dash controls, this is why it switches but directing you to a check valve, if it has one isnt easy. smartest place to start is under the hood and look for a vacuum line coming in the vehicle on the passenger side

follow the black rubber hose from behind the brake fluid reservoir back to the intake manifold vacuum tree there you will find a couple hoses check valves push into the vacuum hoses old plastic check valves are very brittle just locate it drive over to Ford or Good parts store buy a new one then change it out. Also the rubber hose might need to be replaced, and because it is split and your vent control problem is not a check valve problem at all.
