I consider my self to be Socialist. Not Republican, Democrat, Liberal or Conservative. I see some simularities, but they certainly are not one in the same.
Disagree with Republican and Conservative's dogma and holier than thou beliefs and idealogy.
Disagree with Democrats/liberals Idealogy of personal freedoms and liberties (avoiding responiblity)
Agree with Republicans on having a strong state.
Agree with Democrats on having a state that supports the people, if they people support the state.

It's the old adage about the enemy of my enemy in reverse.

If I don't like two different groups, then obviously they must really be the same group. Because we live in a two party system, so anyone who isn't on my side, must be together on the opposite side.

It's sad and delusional, but such is the nature of American politics.

I consider myself a socialist liberal democrat.

I do konw what you are talking about. As coragryph said about grouping enemies together, that is what happens. The people who attack the democrats say that since the democrats believe in giving help to the needy and equalizing everyone, that they have communist/socialist ideals, and tehy say this just to give a bad image to the democrats in front of American eyes.

Socialists have always been less judgmental of society when they were trying to gain control of government. When they gain control.. they become more authoritarian. This is what liberal Democrats do.. Socialists want Government to control our lives. Democrats/liberals want this as well. The more Socialist/Democrats/Liberals control our country, the less freedom we will have. You must be young or uninformed. Pay attention. You have the Internet...use it

Most such people seem to want a one-party state, where everybody believes, or is forced to pretend to believe, the way they do.

It's called, in some quarters, fascism.

Funny thing, but in the USA many people tend to vote against their personal economic interests and over subjects that really aren't, subjectively, very pertinent to them: abortion, gay marriage, school prayer, flag burning, "low taxes". Even when the low tax part really helps the super rich, and the result of deficit spending is that their wages -- and their savings -- are depreciated.

Because liberalism and socialism are more alike than they are different. In fact, most liberals are socialists at heart, but pretend to be more mainstream. They're kinda like Muslims... while they don't denounce terrorism, they secretly support it, while they don't outwardly denounce "infidels", they hate them just the same.

At least you aren't ashamed to admit you're socialist. That's a lot more than most liberals are capable of.... integrity.

Why do not the senators and the congressmen who choose each and absolutely everyone "wealthy" people to pay more beneficial in taxes cleared the direction via elevating their personal "funding in authorities" to, say, 50% of their checks?
