How can I get prevent house flies? All of a sudden, over the past 2-3 days, I go downstairs and see 3-4 flies flying around. My major trash is in my garage. We don't go in and out the doors leaving them open. I don't know what is attracting these things. How can I get rid of them or prevent them? They don't seem to make it upstairs to the bedrooms - thank goodness. HELP!

So I can go get the fly strips and just put them up tomorrow? I do have company coming on Friday and it would be great if they could be gone ASAP. Thanks

I only get a few flies all summer and I live out in the country with a horse barn across the way. I have several of those pest things plugged into the outlets throughout the house. The mice got wise to them, but they still help for flying insects.

Oh dear, I believed those house flies you are talking about are actually LITTLE HOUSE FLIES.
Little house flies (Fannia canicularis) is generally most numerous during the cooler spring and fall months. As temperatures rise in summer, populations of Little house flies diminish.
Little house flies are more reluctant to enter homes than are house flies; instead, they tend to congregate in outdoor areas such as patios, entryways, and garages. They seldom land on human foods and are not considered a significant carrier of human disease agents. However, their habit of hovering at face height makes them annoying, though they move readily out of the way when approached.
Eliminating breeding sites is the preferred method of controlling Little House Flies. Accumulations of manure (especially poultry) or other decaying organic matter are ideal developmental sites. These developmental sites must be removed or spread thin to fully dry. Little house flies are not attracted to the same fly baits or traps that collect house flies. Some relief can be obtained by placing fans in areas where male Little house flies tend to swarm, as the increased air movement will make the site less attractive to them.

This is going to sound gross, but....
Every once in awhile we have a big problem with them in our house, too. After chasing them incessantly with a swatter, my husband finally bought one of those sticky fly strip things and hung it in an inconspicuous area of the house. In a couple days, they were all gone. It's not the prettiest thing to look at, but it works............and fast.
(and if you know company is coming, just take it down temporarily)
