The Sound of Music. A great classic that I just can't get bored of.
I think they don't make as many anymore because people just don't want to see them (perhaps because they are boring compared to the thrillers, special effects, etc. that movies provide these days). Musicals just don't take in the revenue that big movie companies expect nowadays.

My absolute favorite is Annie. I also like Cats, Big River, Chicago, and High School Musical. I haven't seen any others. I think there's only a small amount made because Broadway and surrounding musical theaters can only hold a limited amount at a time but most are too popular to stop.

Musicals are a dying art form. Like the Western. Plus you need a name to become a new icon in order for it to catch on. Like Fred Astaire and the rest from the 30s, 40s and 50s.
That been said, all time faves:
High Society and Moulin Rouge and West Side Story.
And Wizard of Oz. Guess you could consider that a musical.
I'll have to pass on Chicago. Couldn't stand that movie for some reason. =/

The Music Man, Chicago and Fiddler on the Roof. And South Pacific. I LOVE musicals. It's too bad they've stopped making them. I think 'Newsies' was the last attempt? Sad.
Edited to add: Oh yeah, and The Sound of Music! Thank you, previous poster! And Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. And Show Boat.

The musical has not been made because, sadly, it relies on a cast to not only be able to act, but to sing and dance as well. It also requires the directors and production staff/crew to be able to work with singing, dancing, and acting (which is not an easy task, I assure you). In the current climate in the film industry, it is easier and oft-times more profitible to rely on one-trick ponies when it comes to actors and directors than to try and find those that can call upon the various talents necessary to make a great movie.
That being said, my absolute favorite musical of all time is My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. Everything in that movie is impecably well-done.

Theres no need to be in a rush. All the great musicals to date didn't happen all at one time. From Carmen to the Phantom of the Opera to Wicked, these have taken dozens of years. Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell were out in the 70s.
Wicked is rather new, so check that out.
The thing is, you can't be sure what is going to be a hit, so arguing that there are no new musicals is ungrounded. There are no new PHANTASMICAL musicals around 'cuz they may still be too new.
My faves: Phantom, Into the Woods, Moulin Rouge, JC Superstar, and Godspell

West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The Music Man, The King and I.. ....They don't make them like these anymore. They do not make musicals any more for the same reason, I suspect, that westerns aren't made anymore. They are out of favor now.

Cats, Phantom Of The Opera, Newsies, Moulin Rouge. Many have been made in the past few years, you just have to look. If you want DVDs check the musicals section on Amazon. If you want to see a play, there are always bunches of new ones on and off Broadway.
