You will want to check with the Housing Department at the university you are going to. It has been my experience (having helped put 3 kids through college and being a former college student myself) that universities generally have a small limited number of single dorm rooms available and are most often available to upper classmen first. They are also more expensive. When you applied for housing, there should have been a place on the form to request a single room. I don't recommend single rooms for most people. It isolates you more from the college experience plus college can be quite lonely. Having a roommate gives you someone who you can talk to on a regular basis, gives you experience living with someone other than your family, and knows where you are and how you are.

It depends on the university and the type of housing program/plan they offer. At the university I attend they offer private and double rooms, the private rooms cost anywhere from 500-1000 dollars more than double or two person rooms. Just be sure to sign up for housing as soon as possible, complete all the needed paperwork, and pay as soon as you can. Most of the universities that do offer private rooms fill up relatively quick obviously because people want their privacy and peace of mind knowing they don't have to share their space. There are also cases where a week or so after move in or classes start, the housing department offers room and/or dorm changes because people didn't show up on campus and there are vacancies...this is a great opportunity to get a private room or dorm if you're not happy with your choice (although if you switch from a double to private room you may have to pay the difference). Just be sure to check with the housing department for more details...

You can request a single. But often times it costs more to do it that way.
There are some new dorms now that have pods. They're groups of 4 single rooms surrounding a common living area. Check & see if your university offers it.'

Talk to a counselor or whoever is in charge of setting that up. (residence life office?) I know where I am going only select seniors with a high GPA get individual rooms. everyone else gets a roommate. It depends on what university you are attending.

Each school is different, but I think that most have some kind of opportunity to live alone if you choose to...it's usually at quite an expense though.
