You really have 3 different options.
1. Open the program in question and go into the Properties and locate an open to "Launch when windows starts" and disable it. This is a common option in YahooIM and MSN Messenger.
2. Click Start, then Programs, and navigate to the Startup folder and remove any unwanted items from there.
3. Some items do not allow an easy way to disable them and they will need to be disabled in msconfig. Click Start, then Run. Type in "msconfig" and press Enter. Click the Startup tab and remove any programs that you recognize and do not need. If you see a program you do not recognize, try searching the internet to figure out if you need it or not and disable it if it is unneeded.

OK what O S are you running? If your running windows XP you can click start click run and type in the run box msconfig. When it pops up you will see a few tabs. click the tab labeled start there you will see all your start up programs. uncheck the ones you don't want to start up when you boot up. careful though some of them you may need to run your O S. if you have spy bot installed you can see the same start up programs and stop them from running from spy bot

Be really careful what you delete from Startup though. Some of those file names are pretty hard to understand, and they could be vital programs to run your computer.
Check a site like this
http://cybercoyote.org/help/startpgm.htm
for help in deciding what to keep and what to remove from Startup. To remove them, you just uncheck the box next to their names, then restart your computer.

One place you might look is in the "Startup" folder in the "All Programs" under the start button. Remove the shortcuts in that folder. That should help you some.

Much more convenient, download the standalone exe from Mike Lin's home page.
Unchecking a box keeps something from starting, checking it again makes it startup.
I don't have a computer without it.
