He may not be the best man you've ever known once he is single. The "best man you've ever known" (if this pertains to getting into long term relationship) would be one that wants you, completely, fully, for who you are AND would be available to YOU.
Feel free to tell him that if he decides to get divorced, and if he wants to wait a full year to get over the last marriage, if he is interested in dating you, he can give you a call then. Tell him that if you are available at that time, you would consider going out on a date with him.
Do nothing more.
And do NOT put your life on hold for him. Sever any other ties you have with him at this time. Do not try to "be his friend" through his tough times ahead. Go away.
If it is meant to be, it will happen. If he wants you as much as you want him, he will do something about his current situation. But, even if he gets divorced, make him wait ONE YEAR before you go on a date.
