Boracay is a major tourist destination. This area is very safe. It is the southern part of the Philippines that are having troubles. Manilla is a big city so you need to be cautious there too.

I grew up in the Philippines and I've travelled around the country several times! I would say you should not miss stopping by Boracay. It's a great place to unwind, relax and have fun --- and the people there are very friendly.

Manila is a good place to shop but the downside of it is that --- it's too populated and polluted. You had to be SUPER-patient with the traffic. Some places to safely stay and shop are Cebu City and Cagayan de Oro City as far as street crime is concerned. Camiguin Island is also a nice place to go.

Mindanao has so much beauty and is so much better than Manila but you have to avoid certain places. Places you should stay away are those that are in the Southern Mindanao area.

In every big city there are pickpockets and snatchers. Beware of them and don't leave your bags unattended. When you're in your room, be sure to lock your door at all times.

I am a Filipino. Thank you for coming in the Philippines. if youre going on Manila , stay in ortigas and Makati ONLY. Dont wear jewelries. Don't use public transport like buses and trains. Beware of pickpockets and conmen. If you can use a tourist guide or a Filipino friend , the better. Go to high profile places.

I recommended Boracay and Baguio. Be cautious.

Don't go to Mindanao.

Anyway. The Philippines is one the best and the cheapest. Most (not all) people are friendly, courteous and helpful.

Again. Thank you again for coming into the Philippines.

where do i start?

there's a lot of places to go in the philippines, it just depends on what you want to do here.

if you're really into experiencing the local flavors, i suggest that you go during the "festival" months. May is the time when a lot of provinces celebrate their festivities, so its good to come here during that time. You could hop around every province and experience their different cultures.

if you're one of the backcountry types, you could always plan to climb some mountains here. there's a lot of forest reserves here that you could choose from.

if you like beaches, you will probably be dizzy hopping around the many beautiful beaches in the philippines. Most are really unspoiled and you could have a lot of privacy.

Some majoy tourist attractions here are:
Luzon
-Baguio- (Ilocos Region) lots of strawberries, fresh air and nature
-Tagaytay- fresh air, very scenic
-Palawan- the ultimate nature paradise, white beaches, caves, a lot of unique flora and fauna

Visayas
-Cebu- lots of beaches, historical places
-Iloilo- gateway to BORACAY, lots of historical places

Mindanao
-Davao- a lot of nature

Travel warnings are just precautions so that tourists may be a little bit careful when they go in the country. The problem is mainly concentrated on the Southern Philippines because for a long time, there are conflicts between the government and some "rebels". Most of the country is really "conflict-free" so it's pretty much safe to travel here.

I would recommend that if you really want to experience authentic Filipino culture, that you should stay away from the big cities as they can be quite a hassle (especially with the traffic and some con men). As always, when you travel, safety should always be on your mind. Small cities and provinces are always preferable.

Almost all Filipinos can understand English (2nd language) so you would have no problem asking around and interacting. Filipinos are always known for their hospitality.

-->I suggest that you visit the Official website for Philippine Tourism, it features a lot of really helpful information.

Hope that helps.
See you in the Philippines!

The Philippines is practically a safe tourist spot. Just dont go to south-western Mindanao. From the North of Luzon, visit Pagudpud (Ilocos Norte), Vigan (Ilocos Sur),Benguet, Baguio (Summer Capital),Tagaytay, Batangas, Laguna, Metro Manila (the Capital),Camarines Sur and Albay. In the VisayasIsland, Leyte, Davao, Cebu (2nd Largest City), Bohol, Boracay, Mindoro. In Mindanao, it is safe in Palawan(Another tourist spot).
When you get here, consult a travel agency for you to make choices. Enjoy!!!

Why wait until next year to discover PARADISE?
If you listen to the "official" embassy travel warnings you must take that with a pinch of salt.
If the place it's UNSAFE...why they still keep the embassy and everything else open?
If you avoid for the times being the Mindanao area, more or less you can go anywhere else.
Just common sense will get you by.Philippines its often wrongly critisized and security and safety often exagerated.
Go to Boracay, Puerto galera, Baguio, bohol... if you have a pinay girlfriend, you will be ok...she and her family will surely take care of you... Like anywhere else in the world, dont trust taxi drivers.

To not go away from the group of islands known as Luzon, and Mindanao is the group of islands that you should avoid. Here are some festivals to go to.
Sinulog - held in Cebu in January to commemorate the feast of the Sto. Nino

Panagbenga - the flower festival held in Baguio every February

Ati-Atihan - also held to commemorate the feast of the Sto. Nino, but this time in Kalibo on the island of Panay. Said to be the Filipino version of Mardi Gras.

Moriones - held during the Lenten Season in Marinduque. These are passion plays meant to depict the crucifixion and eventual resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Pahiyas - held every May in Lucban, Quezon to celebrate the feast day of San Isidro Labrador. There is a town wide house decoration contest held during the festival and the colors and designs used are a feast for the eyes.

Kadayawan - held in Davao every August, Kadayawan means a ThanksGiving celebration for the good harvest, were most flowers and fruits are available during the season.

The philippines is also great for the beaches.
Boracay - Boracay Island off the island of Panay has the White Beach. It has fine powdery sand stretching several kilometers and is an excellent spot for sun worshippers. Boracay also has several other lesser known beaches. Outrigger boats to Boracay depart from Caticlan Port which is a short flight from Manila.

Mactan Island - in Cebu, the Cebu airport is actually on Mactan Island

Pagudpud - in Ilocos Norte, several hours north of Metro Manila

Panglao - small island off the island of Bohol, a short ride from the capital of Tagbilaran, which in turn is a short fast ferry ride from Cebu City. From Panglao, you can easily schedule an excursion to the Chocolate Hills for which Bohol is most known for.
Puerto Galera - on the island of Mindoro. Ferries to Puerto

Galera depart from Batangas Port, a couple of hours drive south of Metro Manila
Samal Island - off the coast of Davao

I first visited Philippines bout 3 years ago and i found it amazing!!! Im now currently living here so let me tell u something about it on my very own point of view... Philippines has 7107 islands in all (low tide, since only7100 appears at high tide) With this so many islands of course so many beaches and island resorts. Philippines is divided into 3 major large islands..that is, LUZON, VISAYAS and MINDANAO. With this, A portion of Mindanao ( bout half of the region) is the one known to be where the troubles coming from but its not like the situation in the current war in the middle east.in fact, there are even cities in Mindanao that are even considered to be safe(I've been to Davao City already). To play safe (just what i did the first time i came here) I tried Luzon, i suggest Bicol Region. The Place where you can find the ever famous perfect cone volcano, the Mayon Volcano (currently attracting thousands of fellow tourist already due to its expected erruptiuon very soon), http://purpleeyes-mayonvolcano.blogspot.com/
interact with the Whalesharks in the Whaleshark Capital (in Donsol Sorsogon). Join the Religious Pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Basilica del Peñafrancia. Dive into the deep in Virac Catanduanes (I even enjoyed Surfing there)and enjoy the hot and cold springs and white sand beaches. Camp and hike inside the protected virgin forest of the region(Lots of tropical birds and butterflies...).Not to mention the unique native specialty and delicacies of evey town here....
I've tried all these that I have mentioned to you, its really fun and the accomodation here are good and very cheap!!!
Hope ull find this helpful...

Shirley has some very solid recommendations for you. I genuinely have now lived in Luzon for 7 years, and it truly is secure (some communist hardship now and again yet they are purely after "taxes"). have not been in different places, yet might want to circumvent Mindanao (with exception of a few places like Davao) like the plague. Malaysia is between the few places in Asia which i have not visited, and looks interesting. more beneficial information: the first time i became right here in 'ninety 8 with a Taiwanese excursion. even as in Manila, the excursion education guide instructed us it truly is a secure city, yet after darkish to stroll round in pairs. Be warned.
