America is such a diverse country and you will get a different culture/different way of life depending on which part you travel to. For example, I live in the south where everything is more laid back and friendly while up north people tend to be more "uptight" (not all, but more than the south) and busy. And to break it down even more, each state has its differences to no matter which region of the country they are in. For example, both Georgia and Louisianna are part of the southern states, yet Georgia is more "redneck" and "country" and Louisianna is more "cajun" and swampy.
I know I've pretty much just rambled on, but it would help to know which part of the country you are going to. But here are a few things that applies to the whole country: We're free to do pretty much whatever we want as long as it doesn't endanger the lives of ourselves or others. Our highschools aren't as good as those in European countries because while they focus more on academics, we focus more on the well-rounded person (with tons of clubs, sports, activities.....) but we do have the top colleges (Harvard, Yale, Princeton....). America is generally stereotyped as the fat country, it isn't true for most of us. While we do work very hard (I think more than the average person in other countries), we also make time to enjoy life with our friends and family. Our work days are seperated in to three general shifts : 1st shift starts at 7:00 a.m and ends at 3:00 p.m., 2nd shift starts at 3:00 p.m. and ends at 11:00 p.m., 3rd shift starts at 11:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 a.m., but generally people work 7 to 3 or 9 to 5 with a 30 minute lunch break. If you are coming from a European country, lunch is considered the most important part of the day, right? Well, in America breakfast is the most important.
hmmm....lets see, you will find a very diverse group of people no matter where you go and most are very intelligent (even if they don't seem like it here on Yahoo answers).
There's alot more to say, but I have to get up early so I think I'll end here. I hoped I helped!

Simpsons? He's kidding, I'm sure. Either that or I've been insulated. I won't waste time with big issues, e.g. politics, but for a layman, America is in general very similar to any Western country.
Some random day-to-day concerns things off the top of my head:
Economics:
A few people are very rich and powerful, and some are very poor and just getting by. The majority are just average joes with steady jobs who can sometimes enjoy luxuries but who always must keep an eye on the finances.
Demographics:
America is more diverse than most nations. This has led to some social strains, as cultures do not always mix properly. These strains are fuelled mostly by ignorance on the part of a small group of (usually) angry white people. More often than not, though, diversity has benefitted our nation, as we have been able to combine lots of ideas. If you don't like people of different ethnicities, that's okay too, as people tend to live separated by groups.
Education:
I am not happy with our educational system. As a scientist, I've watched as scientific education has slowed down in America, to the point where other countries are ahead of us in technology, engineering, etc. It seems that there is a major concern with a child's self-esteem, to the point where teachers often restrain any constructive criticism for fear of a parent filing a lawsuit. If you browse Yahoo! answers, you will see how ignorant some people can be; it's scary and something we need to work on.
Physical fitness:
Another embarrassing point. We're pretty fat, but not THAT much fatter than any other developed nations. Soft living has taken a toll on us, and it is another area of improvement. People here have to be mindful of their physical activity.
Various other things I have a vague but not extensive opinion on:
Food: Rockin'. Many types, always available.
Entertainment: Lots of choices.
Really, again, America is much like any other country. People work hard, often harder than most Europeans, and get by. Some are more ignorant, and unfortunately, people in foreign countries tend to think they represent the entire American population. One side spouts their BS, the other treats it as the word of a divine entity; both sides could not be more idiotic with this particular issue.

America is a huge big place so what you will find depends on which part you come to. I hope your papers are in order.
We could answer better if we knew where you are coming from.
If you are coming to a big city, big cities are similar all over the world; impersonal. And don't go to the bad neighborhoods. Be polite to the police.
If you are coming to a small town, small towns are the same all over the world; you have no privacy and everyone knows your business. In most places they will be concerned that you are just more of the city folks coming to bid up the price of their real estate so they can't afford the taxes anymore, enact no smoking laws and make them pay $3 for coffee.
If you are coming to a very rural area, like a farm, they are very mechanized now.
Whichever part of America you come to, there is a very important thing you have to do immedietly: learn Spanish. Soon it will be the national language.
Try to avoid talking about religion or politics. Somebody will get mad. Never refer to anyone as "fat" because it is not polite. Since everyone quit smoking, everyone is fat.
If you are flying in, do it soon because soon everyone will have to travel naked and handcuffed, for safety.
We all love jokes, as long as the joke makes fun of someone else.
If you want real information, e-mail me, I will be happy to answer.

I agree with Albert. There are so many stereotypes in the Simpsons that are spot on about Americans.
